NY makes me Purr!

It's been some time since I've sat and thought about what makes me purr......and last night the state of NY showed up and stood for marriage equality for ALL!

Not historic by any means, other states have been ahead of the curve, but with the vote in NY state comes more power to the cause, more equal rights and the ability for people who love each other, regardless of orientation, can now marry!

We need to keep up the cause, keep pushing for all states to recognize that love, like people, comes in all shapes, sizes and sexual orientation.

Looking forward to the day Erik and I get to fight over who wears the dress...watch out Kleinfeld I see a new "Yes to the Dress" episode coming your way!

Love, in all forms, makes me purr........

Music

I love music, love singing in the car, love listening to it at work and it's most genres, except heavy metal and country (well the lead singer of Lady Antebellum is kind of cute!).

When I was in my deepest depression I could listen to music, but couldn't enjoy it, couldn't sing in the car and also turned to some "darker" and "moodier" music. Ok, now listening to that didn't help the depression at all, but it's what I chose to listen to.

During one of my therapy sessions we discussed my lack of singing and feeling light. Once I talked through that I found myself singing in the car again, singing in the house and turning to more "fun" music.

What am I currently playing right now? Well Glee is so super fun they are on my playlist, Lady Gaga (DUH!), and of course (this is for you Michelle) Erasure. I love Adele and if you don't have her album, 19, you need to buy it and her new album, 21, is released on the 22nd. Trust me, buy both! Annie Lennox can always get me through my day!

If you want little hidden surprises, put your iPod on complete shuffle of all songs. There are gems that you haven't listened to in a while that will pop up. Sometimes it's a blast from the past: for me, Hall & Oates"Private Eyes" or something so soul stirring (Beethoven's 9th, Ode To Joy) that it makes my heart stop with its beauty. You can even listen to Country if you want!

Go pop in a CD, 8-Track, Walkman, Discman or even vinyl today. Pull out some old music that evokes great memories, sing at the top of you lungs and above all PURR!

xoxo

Wow, it's been some time since my last post. Lot's of stuff going on.....

First, we adopted a new cat. His name is Mephistopheles, Phiz for short. He's a brown tabby that we got from a local animal shelter. He's somewhere around a year old, a very wee thing of a cat. He's more than half the weight of Cornelius and boy is there some tension between the two of them. Phiz can hold his own, he's tiny but scrappy (and a love muffin to boot). He's my first purr in today's blog.

My second purr is no-kill animal shelters. We got Phiz from the Bristol Animal Shelter. There were two cat rooms, one for the healthy cats and the second for those under quarantine. Most in the quarantine room were new and under observation until they could be integrated into the healthy cat room. Next time you want to adopt, consider a shelter. Or at least consider a shelter as part of your philanthropy each year.....

Third purr! Wow, many purrs today........My third one is getting away from the snow/cold for a short time. I had to go to Orlando for a business summit last week. Now Florida is not my choice of destinations, but having said that, the temperature was in the '60s and sunny. It was nice to get a break from the endless snow that we've been having (but I do love me some snow!).

My mental state has been improving. I'd been in a slight dip the past couple of weeks but am feeling better. Not sure if it's the lengthening of the days, feeling more in control at work or that the meds have really stabilized me. Whatever it is, I'll take it.

Go out and enjoy the day and get at least one purr in.......

ps. Go Steelpacks!

Sparks

Last night Obe got into bed with me and as he was laying next to me his fur was giving off little sparks as I was petting him and as he was rolling on a blanket. I'm fascinated by this phenomenon, it's as if one can create a mini lightening storm in one's home.

Remember how you would scuff your feet on the carpeting and go up to a sibling and shock the heck out of them? Now with the penchant for hardwood floors, have we taken away this method of sibling torture away?

But I digress from what I want to blog about today.

The sparks that I saw last night reminded me of when I was a kid. My sisters/cousins would sequester ourselves in a dark closet with a roll of Lifesavers. Can't remember if they were Pep-o-Mint or Wint-o-Green (don't you just love the names?). Once our eyes would adjust to the darkness one of us would pop a Lifesaver in our mouth and chew it hard with our mouth open. The result? There would be little sparks flying out of their mouth as they chewed. We'd all take turns chewing and watching. We thought it was the coolest thing EVER! I'm not sure who even taught us the trick, it was a fun way to bond and laugh.

If you've never done this, try it for yourself. Pull your kids, nieces, nephews, young cousins, even (gasp) a grandchild away from their Wii, cell phone, TV, computer and show them this simple pleasure. Maybe they'll like it, maybe they will think you are crazy. What's the worst thing that will happen? You'll all walk out of the dark closet with fresh breath!

So at some point today, or in the upcoming week, create some sparks, ignite imagination and perpetuate this tradition with your family.

Spark on.

Snow Day!

Snow days make me purr! Even though we are all more connected with laptops, blackberries and wireless, it's still nice to be able to have a snow day and work from home!

Remember how you woke up in the morning, saw the snow and waited in anticipation to hear if your school was closing? I loved the feeling that the day was all mine, I could do whatever I wanted and that meant getting out in the cold and sledding!

I love the grey, overcast snow day. There's something cocooning about it, even though it's cold out, the soft stillness of the air, the muffled sounds are all comforting to me. Now that I'm older there is the driveway that needs shoveling, the cars need to be cleaned off and the steps shoveled and I prefer to watch from inside a cozy house than playing in it! But there still is that moment of excitement as the first flakes start to fall, the way my bedroom takes on a different quality of light and the crisp, pristine beauty of the snow on the trees and lawn.

SNOW DAY!

Rough Week but I am GOING to PURR!!

Hi,

Had a bit of a roller coaster week at work, some highs but more lows. I know that not every day is sunshine and lollipops, but I was really feeling depressed! Have missed blogging but I don't want a bitch session every time I do it. I know that I should be happy to have a job!

Here's my purr story for today:

The most amazing job I had was as a Buyer for Nordstrom; I bought Crystal, Gourmet Food and Gifts. I was fortunate to get to go on those buying trips you hear about, all through Europe, poking through the stalls in London, selecting ceramics in Italy, going to Germany for Christmas ornaments, etc.

During one trip the crystal company Orrefors/Kosta Boda hosted us to tour their factories and put us up at the Kosta Boda guesthouse (on a subsequent trip I stayed at the Orrefors guesthouse). The Kosta Boda guesthouse is an adorable red house, rustic, but very nice. Their were amazing crystal pieces all throughout the house, none that would fit into my luggage though! However, on our pillows we were each given a small piece.

We toured the three factories that comprise Kosta Boda and the Orrefors factory. We were able to go onto the glass blowing floor in Orrefors and watch the designers and the blowers create a piece. We also got to try our hands, well our mouths, at blowing a piece of crystal, not an easy thing to do. When you blow into the pipe, your breath is super heated and expands quickly. If you blow too hard, you blow a bubble that is paper thin and shatters. Small, delicate breaths are what creates the crystal. Next time you see a piece on mouth blown crystal, know that it's a living thing as it contains the breath of a man, or woman who created it. Crystal is a true celebration of life!

One night Kosta Boda hosted a dinner with all of their designers in attendance. What an amazing night! I was seated next to one of my favorite designers Ulrica Hydman-Vallien. What a treat to be able to talk to her and find out what drove her designs. Now if you are ever in a Scandinavian country and drink a toast, you say Skoal, never lifting the glass higher than your eyes and look straight at someone and drink. We had MANY Skoal moments that night!

So today I drink to you: "Skoal"!

Don't Feel Like Purring

In a morose mood tonight. More tired than anything else. Didn't sleep well, work crap weighing heavy on my mind. Erik's in WV and none of my furry children slept with me last night! No purr there!

Send me a purr story.........
